Funyon-Thank You!

Our Goal: 800

In the quiet shadows of the alleyways, beneath the harsh glare of streetlights that flicker with uncertainty, there roams a weary soul named Funyon. Once a vibrant creature, her spirit now bowed under the weight of relentless hardships. With each labored breath, she searches for a sliver of safety amidst the chaos of the unforgiving streets. Her swollen belly bears witness to the imminent arrival of new life, yet her heart trembles with fear. Desperate, she scours the unfriendly terrain, seeking a sanctuary where she might usher her precious puppies into a world devoid of comfort. Each passing moment drips with apprehension, as Funyon's longing for solace is eclipsed by the looming specter of danger, her maternal instincts a fragile shield against the harsh reality of her existence.

One can only speculate on the tumultuous thoughts swirling in Momma Funyon's mind as she courageously ushered her puppies into the world amidst the challenges of stray life. Whether she received aid from a kind soul or was discovered by Animal Control remains a mystery shrouded in the shadows of her past. What we do know is that she, along with her six tender puppies, found themselves on the city shelter’s kill list for 2/22/23.

Under the safety net that is San Antonio Pets Alive! Funyon found sanctuary—a haven where she could nurture her newborn puppies with tranquility and security. Here, she receives nourishing meals, basks in the warmth of sunlight during walks, and is tenderly cared for by our dedicated staff and volunteers, showering her with affection and support.

Upon weaning Funyon's puppies, we noticed she developed mastitis, a painful inflammation of the mammary glands typically caused by milk accumulation or teat trauma (puppy bites or scratches). Overnight, an infection set in, necessitating urgent intervention. We promptly sought the expertise of a specialized veterinarian who performed a spaying procedure and a double mastectomy, removing the infected glands to save her life. Although a vital procedure, it was highly invasive. Funyon now bears a lengthy incision spanning from her chest to her belly where the glands once resided. Unfortunately, her recovery has been fraught with complications. She has experienced the passing of blood clots through her drains and required additional staples to reinforce her incision site. Daily bandage changes are necessary, and she endures significant discomfort from the ordeal.

All of her surgeries and procedures have cost us around $800.

We're providing Funyon with the utmost tender care she rightfully deserves, but this resilient mom has endured quite the ordeal. Healing her incision site will require weeks of careful attention, but we remain vigilant in monitoring her progress and providing necessary treatment. Despite enduring such trauma and pain, Funyon's gentle and loving nature endures. She still greets us with a wagging tail during walks, offers tender licks on our hands, and shows her gratitude through the affectionate cuddles she receives.
