Programs

San Antonio Pets Alive! fills the gaps in the community by identifying the problems that leave dogs and cats euthanized at the shelter and creating innovative programs to overcome those specific problems.

Currently, we are focused on rescuing the pets who end up at the shelter and helping keep pets from being surrendered to the shelter.  While we believe strongly in spaying and neutering, San Antonio already has great programs for those services, so we are focused on helping the pets who have already been born get out or stay out of the kill shelters.

Rescue

Our rescue program is focused 100% on the dogs and cats who are about to be killed.  We wait until the shelters have chosen the pets they want for their adoption programs and other rescue groups have pulled the pets that they can take, then we go in and rescue the rest that we can fit into our programs.

Foster

A SAPA! foster home is necessary in order to take an animal off of the euthanasia list.  A SAPA! foster will provide a safe and temporary living situation that will allow the foster pet to recover emotionally and physically from the stress of their previous situation. The foster family will be able to share valuable details about the animal’s personality and demeanor that will help match them with a perfect forever home. An animal can be adopted directly from a foster family or an approved adoption event.

Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (PASS)

Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (PASS) is a service provided by San Antonio Pets Alive! (SAPA!) to help people help their pets to find new homes or to stay in their current homes.

Unfortunately, we do not take animals from the public.
We pull straight from the kill list at Animal Care Services and we are the last chance for the pets on that list.
For each animal we would take from the public that is one more pet that has to die in the shelter.

PASS was created to fill in that gap by helping the public find resources to help keep their pets or pets they have found, out of the shelter. Our volunteers take emails from pet owners in crisis and sit outside of San Antonio’s Animal Care Services to counsel people who are about to surrender their pet to the kill shelter.

We have a whole variety of ways we can help you help your pet, from ad placement resources, to low cost medical options, behavioral resources, help with food, and even advocating on your behalf if needed. We are thrilled to share all of these resources with you so we can all work together to make San Antonio a No Kill city as soon as possible.

We will work together with you to determine and implement the best solution for you and your pet. Thank you for caring enough to try to keep your pet out of the shelter.

We are a nonprofit organization run by volunteers with limited funding to help owners rehome their pets. Some participation on your part is required during the process; however, we offer a positive alternative to kill shelters.

Our PASS team is able to send approximately 20-25% of the pets back home who were brought to the shelter to be surrendered, by helping the owners with their problems.

Email pass@sanantoniopetsalive.org and provide as much information as possible. Be sure to leave your name and appropriate contact information. Please be patient as a representative will contact you as soon as possible.

We also have a table inside San Antonio’s Animal Care Services lobby where our onsite PASS team can offer advice during normal business hours.
