FOSTER VETERINARY CARE

SAPA! is proud that our network of fosters runs far and wide and we are grateful for so many that sacrifice to save lives. SAPA! will provide food and all necessary veterinary care for our fosters at our main office and veterinary partners in San Antonio. We regret that we are not able to provide veterinary services or adoption events for fosters outside the immediate San Antonio area.

San Antonio Pets Alive! is not affiliated with Austin Pets Alive! APA! cannot accept transfer or or provide services to SAPA! animals.
All veterinary care is provided by SAPA! or an approved partner in the San Antonio area.
It is the responsibility of the foster parent to commit to accessing these services.
SAPA! fosters are required to keep their foster pets up to date on vaccines and preventatives as well as any necessary medication. These are provided by SAPA! but cannot be mailed.
Any Veterinary Care received outside the SAPA! program must be documented and submitted to fostermedical@sanantoniopetsalive.org. Animals may not be released for adoption if veterinary records are missing.
SAPA! will not reimburse foster parents for veterinary care, medication or transportation costs.

FOSTER MARKETING

Foster animals need to be advertised to find an adopter. Depending on age, size, and medical condition the average time in foster care can range from 2 weeks to 3 months. SAPA! relies on our foster parents to help find a permanent home for each of their fosters.

SAPA! needs foster homes to care for unweaned puppies and kittens. This requires around-the-clock care for bottle feeding. Are you signing up to foster animals under the age of 4 weeks?*

SAPA! requires that all foster animals from our shelter be quarantined or isolated from all animals and small children for a minimum of seven days for in home behavioral observation and disease prevention. Please indicate your ability to provide in-home quarantine so we may match you with the proper foster animal:*

Quarantine Requirements: All fosters coming directly from SAPA! Kennels must be restricted from introduction to other family pets or fosters for a minimum of 7 days. This can be done by segregating the animal to their own room such as a bathroom or crate. If you do not have room to crate the animals in separate rooms, you can use separate crates divided & protected with blankets. It is important that you provide all animals their own water & food bowls and do not allow them to share bowls during the quarantine period. Also, animals are not to share toys, bedding, or blankets during quarantine period. Once the quarantine period is complete, SAPA! also recommends that all animals are introduced to each other on neutral ground & by leash to ensure the safety and well-being of all animals & humans involved. When getting to know your new fosters & socializing with them, please do not leave small children unattended with animals. Nursing or Pregnant mothers must be quarantined to a seperate room from other animals and young children until litters are weaned.

Fostering Agreement

Pet's Health and Disposition: San Antonio Pets Alive! cannot guarantee the health or disposition of any foster animal. We do not have past records for these animals and there are some risks associated with taking in foster animals. Foster pets will be kept isolated from family pets for a minimum of 7 days for the protection of all animals. I agree to be fully responsible for the safety and well being of the foster pet. I will provide a safe, loving, humane environment with adequate food water and shelter at all times. I will not declaw, crop ears, or crop tail of fostered pet. I will adhere to all state and local animal laws. I will promptly notify San Antonio Pets Alive! of any signs of illness, behavioral issues or concerns, an inability to continue to foster, if the pet become lost, and/or if the pets bites someone. *

Transfer of Animals: Animals cannot be transferred to the custody of another person, shelter, humane society, SPCA, or other entity without prior consent and permission of San Antonio Pets Alive! I agree to not place this pet in another home without the written or verbal authorization from SAPA!, whether it be temporary or permanent.*

Return of Animals: All the pets in the San Antonio Pets Alive! foster program are the property of San Antonio Pets Alive! and must be returned within 24 hours of request. I agree that I am fostering this pet for San Antonio Pets Alive! and that I do not have any right of ownership over my foster animal. I further agree that San Antonio Pets Alive!’s rights in and to my foster pet are superior to mine. I agree to provide the Authorized Representative, or his/her designate access to my home and property to check on my foster pet, at any time while I am in possession of my foster pet.*

Personal or Property Damage and/or Injury: I agree that accidental animal bites or other injuries to humans and other animals do occur, and agree to hold harmless and indemnify, and protect San Antonio Pets Alive! from any claim or suit filed by someone as a result of such incident. In addition, San Antonio Pets Alive! will not be responsible if animal should damage or destroy property belonging to Foster Caregiver, Foster Caregiver household, or others, or if the animal shall transfer any disease, internal or external parasites to other animals and people in Foster Caregiver's household. *
